When a fern spore germinates, it grows into small, simple heart-shaped or round photosynthetic gametophyte with unicellular rhizoids on the lower surface with no vascular tissue and no epidermis. Each gametophyte usually bears both antheridia ( male sex organ ) and archegonia ( female sex organ ). Antheridia develop early and can be difficult to detect because they hide among the rhizoids. Archegonia develop later, close to the gametophyte apex. When the environment is sufficiently moist, antheridia release motile sperm cells that swim towards the archegonia to fertilize the egg. After fertilization, the zygote is retained by the gametophyte to nourish it. The zygote develops into a young sporaphyte with its first leaves and becomes independent from the gametophyte. It continues to grow and eventually destroys the gametophyte.
